  • Performance Evaluation

I just got out of a performance review.  On a scale from 1 to 5, I got an average of 4.30.   This falls in a high strong category.  The review basically went well.  The boss basically used the sandwich technique.  She said a few nice words. Then she slips in the knife and twist a few times.  It’s called the “areas for improvement.”  And then she pats me on my way.

My “areas for improvement” are my interpersonal skills and my problem solving/decision.  In interpersonal skills, she recommended that I adjust tactics to achieve desired results and not be like “a bull in a China shop.”  I should learn how to manage my conflict and strong emotions.  I should hold back my emotions and be less aggressive and more politically correct.  In problem solving/decision making, she said that with experience, I will learn how to gather and analyze information skillfully and develop alternative solutions.  The rest of the ratings ranged from strong to outstanding.  Here is my supervisor’s comment:  “You have been a great addition to the Interagency Group.  You have been exposed to a very diverse assortment of people and job functions and have come out shining.  As you continue to gain experience, I can easily see you rising in Public Works and becoming a prominent component.  Keep up the good work and I appreciate all the hard work you have given this year.”

How do you feel about evaluating another person’s performance in a few words on a piece of paper? Do you think it actually describes the person? Who should evaluate a person’s progress and achievement?

  • I don’t think the evaulation is all that accurate. It  does not really tell all about a person so no, I don’t really like that idea all that much but it’s needed to determine people’s raises, I suppose. Have a great weekend, Anh. =)

  • i used to care about the performance evaluations… but not any more…

  • I have been doing contracting work for over 6 six years, so no review for me ….I give myself a review and a raise every six months …. lolz
    Have a good weekend

  • I used to have to do a lot of evaluations I made the person do one of themselves and then I did one and we compared them and discussed where they differed.  But I don’t think evaluations help much and the person evaluating themselves are a lot harder on themselves then those looking in. I like your new profile picture. How long between those two pictures they make you look quite different. Judi

  • screw political correctness. People need to lighten up anyways

  • Good questions Anh. Now suppose you are the manager, you have 3 people work for you who are just as competence as another. But you will have to rank them 1, 2, 3 per guideline. What will you do? I see musical chair is being play, don’t you think?
